How to care for a leather handbag

A good leather handbag is an investment, and like any investment it rewards a little attention. The good news is that leather care is simple. A few minutes every couple of weeks, and a more thorough clean a couple of times a year, will keep your bag looking its best for a long time. Here is how to do it.

Everyday habits that make the biggest difference

  • Do not overfill it. Overstuffing stretches the leather and strains the handles and seams.
  • Set it down with care. Avoid wet pavements and sticky café tables; a bag hook or the chair beside you is better.
  • Clean hands help. Hand cream, make-up and food leave marks, especially on lighter colours.
  • Watch out for colour transfer. Dark denim can rub off on pale leather, and richly coloured leather can mark light clothes.

Cleaning and conditioning

Every week or two, wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For light marks, use a cloth that is barely damp with water, then let the bag dry naturally. Always test anything new on a small, hidden area first.

Empty the bag regularly and shake out crumbs and dust. A suede or fabric lining can be refreshed with a soft brush or a lint roller.

Leather is a natural material, and it can dry out over time, especially with central heating in winter or strong sun in summer. Apply a leather conditioner suited to handbags roughly every six months, or whenever the leather starts to feel dry.

  • Wipe the bag clean and let it dry completely.
  • Test the conditioner on a hidden area and wait to check the colour.
  • Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, working in gentle circles.
  • Let it absorb, then buff lightly with a clean cloth.

Less is more: too much product can leave the leather sticky or darken it.

Caring for different finishes

Croc-embossed leather, like our Maxima Croco Tote, has a raised pattern that can trap dust. Use a soft, dry brush to clean the grooves before wiping, and apply conditioner sparingly so it does not build up in the texture.

Smooth leather, like the Navona Classic, shows fingerprints and light scratches more easily. Many small scratches can be softened by gently rubbing with a clean fingertip; the warmth helps the leather settle.

Quilted leather, like the Alita Shoulder Bag, needs attention along the stitch lines, where dust collects. A soft brush works well here too.

Nubuck and suede should not be treated with ordinary conditioner. Use a dedicated suede brush and protector instead.

Rain, storage and travel

Rain happens, especially in the UK. If your bag gets wet, blot it gently with a dry cloth rather than rubbing. Stuff it loosely with paper to help it keep its shape, and let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sun.

Heat can make leather stiff and cracked. Once dry, a light coat of conditioner will restore its softness.

To store a leather bag well:

  • Keep it in a breathable dust bag or a cotton pillowcase, never in plastic.
  • Stuff it lightly with paper to hold its shape.
  • Store it upright on a shelf, rather than hanging it by the handles for long periods.
  • Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.

When you travel, pack your handbag inside your suitcase in its dust bag, stuffed lightly with clothes so it keeps its shape. Avoid squashing it under heavy items, and keep liquids such as perfume and sun cream in a sealed pouch so they cannot leak onto the leather. In hot climates, do not leave it in a parked car or on a sunny windowsill.

Repairs and patina

Deep stains, ink, torn stitching or damaged hardware are best left to a specialist leather repairer. Trying to fix them at home with strong cleaners can make things worse.

Over time, leather softens and develops a patina. That is part of its charm and a sign of a bag that has been used and loved. With regular care, it will look better, not worse, as the years go by.
